Some highlights to enjoy in this special destination, even when time is tight
With its wide avenues lined with flowering trees, parks, canals dating to Dutch times, distinctive wooden buildings (some with louvred Demerara shutters, like the one pictured), Guyana’s capital Georgetown — affectionately called the “Garden City of the Caribbean” — exudes a physical graciousness, even with its bustling population, busy port and harbour. Look for the Gothic-style City Hall (1887) and majestic Parliament building on Avenue of the Republic; St George’s Anglican Cathedral (1892 — one of the world’s tallest wooden buildings at 142 feet); and the Law Courts (1878) with their imitation Tudor frames.
