Three exhibitions by Dominica-born artists are up at two of the island’s most unique gallery spaces
Two unconventional, sister gallery spaces — the Old Oven Art Gallery, opened in 2023 and tucked away within the Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort in Roseau, and the Bwa Denn Art Gallery at Secret Bay in Portsmouth, which opened in 2024 — curate and showcase the tremendous talent of Dominica’s artists.
Currently extended to 31 January at Bwa Denn, after opening last October, is the solo exhibition Roots, My Story to Tell by the United Kingdom-based Heston Francis. The exhibition presents a moving visual journey through personal memory and ancestral heritage, exploring Afro-Caribbean legacies, Kalinago traditions, and colonial histories.
Meanwhile, at the Old Oven through 26 January, Marica Honychurch’s Salt and Soul is on view — a powerful solo photographic exhibition that pays tribute to Dominica’s people, energy, and culture. Inspired by Ole Mas and Creole heritage, the works are intended as a living archive of creativity and cultural pride. The exhibition then transfers to Bwa Denn (2 February–20 April).
Then, from 5 February to 30 April, the Old Oven presents Catharsis — the blues, a new solo exhibition by Vienna-based artist Pauline Marcelle. Here, blue becomes an act of mourning and renewal — a visual and emotional field through which she reimagines the relationship between humanity, memory, and the wounded planet.
